2024 Australasian Road Safety Conference

The 2024 Australasian Road Safety Conference, held from 30 September to 3 October 2024 in Hobart, Tasmania, brought together Australasia’s leading road safety and injury prevention researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to address how each nation can enhance their road safety outcomes.

Representatives of the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police (PICP) Road Safe Pacific (RSP) programme, Fiji Police Force Assistant Commissioner Livai Driu and Kiribati Police Service Superintendent Waibenua Atema and Inspector Bakaea Iotaake had the pleasure of joining road safety practitioners and academics for a week of collaboration and information sharing.

Assistant Commissioner Driu was invited to participate in a panel discussion on Enforcement - Technology in Road Policing, which provided a platform to build awareness on road safety challenges in the Pacific, particularly with embracing new and emerging road safety technology.

“Fiji was one of the first countries to adopt speed camera technology in the Pacific” and in the spirit of unity and shared responsibility, the Assistant Commissioner encouraged other Pacific nations to embrace emerging road safety technology, to help reduce the risk of accidents, injuries, and fatalities on our roads.

Assistant Commissioner Driu further shared that “attending the conference provided an opportunity to network and meet with likeminded partners to discuss road safety and identify innovative solutions that could be applied in a Pacific context”.

The conference included a Vision Zero Workshop, which explored Low and Middle-Income Countries application of safe system best practice in the Asia Pacific region, and a Road Policing Network meeting hosted by the Australasian College of Road Safety (ACRS).

The PICP extends its gratitude to the ACRS and Australian Federal Police Law Enforcement Cooperation Program for their support for RSP representatives participation at this conference.
